A minstrel show was a form of entertainment popular in the United States in the 19th century. It was characterized by white performers in blackface makeup who would mock and caricature African Americans with songs, dances, and comedic skits. The shows often portrayed African Americans as lazy, ignorant, and buffoonish. Minstrel shows were first performed in the early 1830s and remained popular until the early 1900s, when they began to fall out of favor due to growing public awareness of the harm caused by such racist depictions. Minstrel shows are now widely regarded as an offensive and demeaning form of entertainment and are no longer performed.
